I respect the work of Ms.
I respect the work of Ms. Goodall, but as far as I have found, there are different opinions as far as her work is concerned. Some say, that "When legendary scientist Jane Goodall first came to Tanzania more than 35 years ago to study the chimpanzees of Gombe National Park, the vast, flourishing forest teemed with apes. Today, the park is ravaged by logging, and home to only about 40 chimps, who live confined to a few protected square miles. But the chimp population in Gombe remains abuzz with drama and intrigue. Of the many chimps Ms. Goodall got to know when she began her studies in 1960, just one -- Fifi -- is alive today. And Fifi's two eldest sons, Freud and Frodo, are now locked in a power struggle over the title of top-ranking male, a conflict that is dominating life in the community", there is even a film on this issue - IMAX-Jane-Goodalls-Wild-Chimpanzees . I don't want to spread rumors, I just want to know the truth...

Dear Gabriell,
Thank you for your email, it is always nice to hear that people make an effort to learn more about Dr Goodall.
The article you cite states somewhat odd things and dramatizes natural phenomena. Let us try and clarify it to you. Dr. Goodall arrived in Gombe, Tanzania in 1960, 50 years ago. The area was vast and flourishing and it teemed with all sort of wildlife. Unfortunately, just as it happened all through Africa, illegal logging and bushmeat trade stared being stronger and stronger. Fortunately, respecting Dr Goodall's work, the Tanzanian government made Gombe a protected national park where chimps could live safe. For keeping genetic diversity as high as possible, green corridors are being built to make it possible for the chimps to meet their fellow specimens.
As chimpanzees live for about 30-50 years, it is not a surprise that there is no chimp alive whom Jane Goodall originally started to work with. No surprise about the conflict on dominating life either. Every chimp wants their genes to be given to the future generation. The higher ranking a chimp is the more chance it gets to sire offspring.
We are very happy that you respect the work of Dr Goodall and hope that you will keep following her work.
Kind regards,
The Jane Goodall Institute Hungary
